Description: Technology of the postwar years not only helped in harvesting, but also in planting as seen in this 1975 photograph of a corn planter, taken by Joe Munroe. This planter could plant twelve rows at once, in addition to laying down fertilizers and insecticides. This was a great advancement from the 1940s, when two rows was the average on farmer could plant at a time. Joe Munroe's career began in 1939 at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. He served in the Air Force during World War II and then joined Cincinnati-based Farm Quarterly magazine. Though raised in Detroit, agriculture became an important subject of Joe's photographs. He moved to California in 1955 and free-lanced, taking magazine assignments and selling his own work. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This photograph is a part of a series of photographs taken by the Ohio Department of Agriculture documenting farms in Ohio. Pictured are two farmhands spraying potatoes on the farm of W. I. Chamberlain, located one mile north of Hudson, Ohio, in Summit County. Chamberlain (1837-1920) served at one time as Secretary of the Ohio Board of Agriculture. At the time of this photograph in 1910, Chamberlain had 113 acres, including 15 acres in old orchard and 10 acres in young orchard, 12 acres of potatoes, 400 maple trees and a sugar camp. Description: Photograph showing a group of workers picking grapes. At their feet can be seen baskets into which they pile the picked grapes. These filled baskets would be picked up and transported to a central storage and shipping area by the horses and wagon shown at the center of the photo. The worker's pay would depend on how many baskets they could fill, as they were generally paid a set amount per basket. Description: These two cartoons appeared in "The Ohio Farmer" on September 12 and 26, 1936. In the first, an elderly farmer rejects a salesman's corn harvesting machine in favor of an old-fashioned corn knife. He is unwilling to spend money "just to save a little work." At the end of an exhausting day in the fields, he has reconsidered and is calling the salesman to buy the machine. In the second cartoon, the same farmer and his two helpers are breaking their backs digging potatoes until he decides to buy a mechanized potato digger. Though still horse-drawn, this bit of technology makes his day much easier. View on Ohio Memory.
